Team Has Arrived!!

by Carlene Cummings | June 16, 2024 1:24 PM

The team made it safely to Alaska around 9pm. Everyone and their luggage arrived. We got to our lodging place and had some much needed pizza.

Point A to Point B

We had the opportunity to worship at First Covenant Church in Anchorage. The covenant denomination is a fairly tight knit community. It was very fun to share with them that we were going to support one of their pastors in a village.

Here is Ellen and Anna Grace showing where we are and where we are going.

Off we Go!!

by Carlene Cummings | June 16, 2024 4:16 PM

We are off!! We have professionally packed the plane. Thankfully between the bush plane and commercial flight we were able to load all of our supplies.

Villages in Alaska are "off the road system". That means there are no roads that go into the village. This makes getting simple things like groceries more difficult and more expensive. Because of this we are bringing about 6 hard sided bins of food with us.

Here is a pic of the bush plane crew getting ready for take off!!

King of the Air

by Carlene Cummings | June 17, 2024 1:53 AM

The whole team before we get off to western Alaska!! Grant will be flying 10 of us in a King Air bush plane. This is a little bigger and faster than many bush planes.

The trip will be about 2 hours long. The sky is clear so we were able to see Denali in the distance!!

Clear for Landing

by Carlene Cummings | June 17, 2024 2:02 AM

We had a nice landing on the dirt landing strip in white mountain. Pastor Bonnie meet us with an ATV with a trailer to help get our bags and bins to the church.

This is the before picture of Pastor Bonnie's living room. Pastor Bonnie moved into this parsonage in October of 2023. She is slowly but surely making it feel like home. Some things she is unable to do on her own and some things are much easier when you have many hands.

We will be moving some furniture around, cleaning out closets and painting.

Stay Tuned for the transformation!

Word Travels Fast In the Village

by Carlene Cummings | June 17, 2024 2:54 PM

Abby, Anna Grace, Tucker, Maya and Finley are making some posters to hang up around town for VBS tomorrow.

We will have crafts, games and Bible stories. We will be taking some time to walk through the village and hang up posters and meet people. We are hoping to get the word out to families and kids to come join us tomorrow!

Welcome to Church!

by Carlene Cummings | June 18, 2024 3:55 PM

This is the beautiful building of White Mountain Covenant Church! We will host a day of VBS, do some cleaning and organizing and hopefully give the bell a look at.

Welcome to Church!

Bugs Can't Stop us!

by Carlene Cummings | June 18, 2024 3:58 PM

The mosquitos are like thick clouds! They boys were gracious enough to work out in the yard cleaning up trash and old wood. Some people from the city will be able to stop by and take it to the dump.

Fire Wood for Days

by Carlene Cummings | June 18, 2024 4:06 PM

The Mayor Dan told us to go up to the cemetery and grab some cut logs. The team was able to use a chain saw to make rounds and an ax to split it. Bonnie has a place to store it and it will hopefully last most of the fall and winter.

Many homes in Alaska, especially more remote villages, have wood burning stoves to warm their homes. So having wood ready to use is very important. Bonnie has relied on others in the village to bring her split wood.

A New Coat

by Carlene Cummings | June 18, 2024 5:29 PM

A New Coat of Paint makes a world of difference. I don't think anyone knows when this house was last painted inside. And the walls were quite dirty and in need of a fresh start.

Tate, Caitlin, Hank and Britt were hard at work getting the first coat of new paint on.

Native Store

by Carlene Cummings | June 19, 2024 1:59 AM

We had to take a trip to the one grocery store in White Mountain. White Mountain Native Store receives groceries, household items and other necessities. This is the only store in the village. Prices for items are about double to triple the cost as Anchorage, which is already more expensive than the lower 48 states.

Beach Vibes

by Carlene Cummings | June 19, 2024 2:01 AM

Every night, we have spent some time on the beach of the river singing worship songs. Monday we had a few friends join us. We were finally able to meet some of the kids in the village. Some kids have been to Bible camp in a neighboring village and knew many fun camp songs!

Play Cousins

by Carlene Cummings | June 19, 2024 2:02 AM

Many families in the village are related one way or another. But even when they are not blood related they still feel like cousins. There are about 280 total people in the village.

Up the road from the church is the "Big School" or so the kids call it. They have a basketball court and play ground. The kids have LOVED having the team to play with. There was quite the competition on the court.

White Mountain

by Carlene Cummings | June 19, 2024 2:15 AM

THE White Mountain is not too far of a walk from the school. We were able to go see great views and spend time with kids. This spot is a great area to see for miles including a great view of the whole village.

We are getting there. White walls are done and we are moving up the stairs. Caitlin is getting ready to paint the stair wall. This will be the accent wall to give the room some dimension.

More Firewood

by Carlene Cummings | June 19, 2024 2:22 AM

Fin, Austin and Fitch were hard at work chopping more fire wood. We definitely ended up with quite as large stack!

VBS- Bracelet Station

by Carlene Cummings | June 19, 2024 3:46 AM

Hank, Finley, Tucker and Fun spent some time making bracelets with kids. So many different beaded designs and friendship bracelets!

VBS- Picture Station

by Carlene Cummings | June 19, 2024 12:45 PM

The team brought a Polaroid camera! We were able to take pictures with kids (and some adults) and put them in cute foam frames. They could decorate them with foam stickers and markers.

VBS- Story Time

by Carlene Cummings | June 19, 2024 12:48 PM

Jason had a blast leading a story time and skit! The kids acted out the story of the good Samaritan. They loved it so much they asked if we could do it again tomorrow.

The After Picture

by Carlene Cummings | June 19, 2024 12:52 PM

We cleared storage from under the stairs, painted all the walls, and rearranged furniture. This space is feeling so much more open and brighter! Bonnie feels "like the nails are no longer scrapping against the chalk board". It brings so much peace to her home.
